Laboratory Tests for Hyperlipidaemia A detailed description of the various laboratory tests that are available is beyond the scope of this section. Generally, however, therapeutic decisions aimed at atherosclerosis prevention are based on determination of LDL and HDL levels. Estimation of LDL levels using a particular formula (Fig. 6.30) is adequate when triglyceride levels are below 5mmol/l. When they are higher, however, ultracentrifugation of plasma is necessary.
